How the digital ID works

One digital ID. It holds up when your work is copied.

Your work gets one digital ID. It recognizes your text wherever it turns up, in full, in an excerpt, or inside someone else’s page, and connects it back to you and your terms.

What it recognizes

  • The whole work, exactly. The same text always gets the same digital ID, so anyone can check it.
  • The same text, formatted differently. Curly or straight quotes, dashes, spacing, and line breaks don’t change it.
  • An excerpt. A few hundred words lifted from the middle of the work, even when cut off mid-sentence.
  • A copy on someone else’s site. Their navigation, ads, and footer around your text don’t hide it.
  • Light edits. A changed word here and there still leaves your text recognizable.

Where AI uses your work, it is your text

When an AI assistant answers a question from the web, it is first handed passages of the original pages, word for word. That is where the digital ID recognizes your work. The assistant may reword its answer, but the passage it read was yours, and that is the use the digital ID counts.

Tested

On our own published articles, every 250-word excerpt was matched to the right work. In 3,990 checks against the other articles, no excerpt was credited to the wrong one.

When two works share the same text, such as a paragraph an owner repeats across articles, that text is credited to neither. A match always points to one owner.

How we tested: 16 published articles by one author, 16,953 words. Every 250-word window, taken every 50 words, was checked against its own article and against each of the other 15, verbatim and with one word in 25 changed. The next test is a larger collection with many owners.

What it answers

Who owns it?The owner and the terms on the digital ID, dated and signed by Alltio.
When was it used?Crawler visits are counted today. Retrieval and training use are counted once AI labs share their usage logs.
How much? How much of each passage an AI system read comes from each work. That is the share a collective agreement pays out on.

What it doesn’t do

  • Text rewritten in other words, or translated.
  • A single quoted sentence on its own. It is reported as a weak signal, not a match.
  • Images, audio, and video. The digital ID covers text.

Giving a work a digital ID takes a fraction of a second. Checking a passage is one call to the lookup API.
